Step 1 — Define Your Trip
Fill this in before you start packing.
Destination
Trip length
Season / climate
☐ Hot & humid ☐ Warm & dry ☐ Mild ☐ Cold ☐ Mixed
Activities
☐ Urban ☐ Business ☐ Beach ☐ Hiking ☐ Formal event
Laundry access?
☐ Yes — hotel / laundromat ☐ Hand-wash only ☐ None
Carry-on only? ☐ Yes ☐ No
Step 2 — Build Your Core 10
Check the items you're packing. Write the color next to each so you can verify everything mixes.
Tops (pick 3–4)
- Merino tee #1
- Merino tee #2
- Button-down / blouse
- Long-sleeve / sweater
Layers (pick 2)
- Packable rain jacket
- Insulated jacket or fleece
Bottoms (pick 2)
- Versatile pants
- Dressier pants / skirt / dress
Shoes (pick 2)
- Everyday walking shoe
- Sandal / dress shoe / trail runner
Essentials
- 3–5 × underwear (quick-dry)
- 3–5 × socks (merino or synthetic)
Step 3 — Count Your Outfits
Every good capsule passes the combination test. Multiply tops × bottoms — aim for at least 2× your trip length before repeating.
| My tops | × | My bottoms | = | Outfit combinations | Trip length | Pass? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| × | = | ☐ Yes ☐ No |
Target: combinations ≥ 2× trip days (e.g., 7-night trip needs at least 14 combinations). With laundry access you can halve the target.
Step 4 — Fabric Check
Run every core piece through this checklist before packing. Fail 2 or more checks → leave it home.
- Wrinkle-resistant? Merino, nylon, polyester blends pass. 100% cotton fails.
- Quick-dry? Should dry overnight from a hand-wash.
- Hand-washable? Check the care label — machine-only fabrics are a liability on the road.
- Works in 2+ contexts? Casual + smart-casual, or outdoor + urban.
Step 5 — Final Weight Check
| Bag type | Clothing weight target | My actual weight | Pass? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal item / backpack | Under 5 lb / 2.3 kg | ☐ Yes ☐ No | |
| Carry-on bag | Under 12 lb / 5.4 kg | ☐ Yes ☐ No | |
| Checked bag | No limit — challenge yourself anyway | — |
One-bag rule: If everything fits in a single carry-on at or under airline limits, you've built a capsule that can go anywhere.
